Interview with Himani Chopra, an aspiring Digital Marketer

Himani is an engineering student pursuing Btech from Hindu engineering college. She made a career change from computer science to digital marketing. According to her, this change was the best move she could have possibly made because it opened new opportunities and gave her a sense of purpose and a strong desire to achieve. Today she is working as an intern at Digital Vidya. Opting for Digital marketing helped her to compete for head to head with large companies. She believes that digital marketing can get a whole lot of advantages even as a startup or small business leader.

Which course of Digital Vidya did you participate in? How did it help you acquire new skills related to digital marketing?

Himani C: I have recently completed a course from Digital Vidya named CDMM( certified digital marketing master). My experience with digital vidya was satisfactory. Digital Vidya provides a separate coordinator for each and every student opting for the course, they helped me throughout my complete journey. They also helped me in re-scheduling the classes which made me stress-free. Also, they guided me in acquiring some skills related to digital marketing This has 6 modules in total with some special sessions.

Himani C: As the internet and electronic devices become increasingly important in our lives, the need for digital marketing keeps on increasing. Digital marketing industry in India is a profitable career today. In a country with a rapidly growing economy, it is expected to have a significant growth in Digital marketing career. It is estimated that the job opportunities for this field are much higher as compared to other fields in the future.

Himani C: Digital marketing helps in transforming a company into a brand by getting the right audience within less period of time. Be it finance, healthcare, tourism, education, fashion or any industry, companies are now incorporating digital marketing strategies into there existing businesses and this is the reason behind the rise of digital marketing as a career option.  It is not only now but also in the coming years, the number of jobs opportunities are higher in number. So, if you want to pursue digital marketing as a career, then there is a lot waiting for you in the corporate world. The most crucial advantage of digital marketing is that it is cost effective.

How do you stay updated on the latest trends in Digital Marketing? Which are the Digital Marketing resources (i.e. blogs/websites/apps) you visit regularly?

Himani C: Today mobile apps are a useful part of our daily routines. We wake up in the morning turn off our alarm, check our texting apps and make a post on our social media accounts. So, Social media channels and some mobile applications are my sources for gaining the latest trends in digital marketing. Whereas, Youtube is also a powerful medium to get in touch with the upcoming and changing trends through my personal experience. Even, TED talks are one of the great ways to develop yourself and relax at the same time.  All we have to do is sit back, relax and watch a video that will teach you something stunning.

Which are your favourite 3 digital media channels (e.g. Twitter, Google etc) and why?

Himani C: First- Google is the best search engine in the world. It is one of the most convenient, easy to use search engines of all time. You just have to type and the solution to all the problems are in front of your eyes.

Second-Youtube is my second most favourite media channel. It is one of the most powerful media in order to generate leads or gain knowledge and TED talks are one of the great ways to develop yourself on youtube and relax at the same time.  All we have to do is sit back, relax and watch a video that will teach you something stunning.

Third-Snapchat is one of the most favourite digital media channels because we can post behind the scenes making of the product which catches the eyes of the user and the user will be willing to buy the product. We can also make our content fun and engage by adding filters.

Which are your 3 favourite Digital Marketing Tools?

Himani C: Canva and Photoshop – Canva is an online tool that lets users design & creates images and infographics, especially for their social media platforms. This site is incredibly user-friendly. Moreover, Photoshop is the world’s best imaging and photo editing software.

Hubspot is an inbound marketing tool which plays the most important role in inbound marketing. Basically, it help companies attract visitors, converts leads and close customer. For people in the field of inbound marketing, this tools plays the work of a soul for them.

Keyword planner works to find the keywords that are most relevant to your business but it is designed as a paid tool. Keyword search is one of the first and most important steps in any search engine optimization initiatives.

What is your advice to newbies who want to build a career in Digital Marketing?

Himani C: People who want to build a career in the digital marketing field must be familiar with these actions in order to gain knowledge fast:-

  1. Start a Personal Blog.
  2. Use Social Media Channels.
  3. Learn how to manage time effectively.
  4. Search on the web “What Digital Marketing is”?

What are the challenges a person is likely to face when s/he enters into Digital Marketing industry? How can s/he overcome those?

Himani C: There are some problems that everyone experiences at least once in the course of their digital marketing. The most common problem that takes place with each and every marketer is how to stand out against bigger competitors with a small digital marketing budget. How to optimally use that relatively low budget to target the required audience. The second problem occurs while generating the posts that attract the customers. It is very necessary to understand the behaviour of your customers.

For someone who’s looking at full time or part time job or an internship in Digital Marketing, what approach would you advice?

Himani C: I believe the most significant part behind looking for a job either it be full time or part time on as an intern is to face rejection because in each and every stage of your life you are going to meet people that are above you. In order to grow fast in your career, you need to have a positive attitude and never stop learning. So, you must have a basic knowledge of each and every module of digital marketing.

Digital media especially Social media channels such as Facebook can eat up a lot of your productive time if not used wisely. Do you agree? What all can one do to efficiently leverage these channels for personal growth?

Himani C: Yes, digital media channels such as social media when not used wisely can eat our lots of productive time. But, social media channels are a great way to leverage your personal growth.

Firstly, we need to start by building a presence on social media platforms. We shall always explore the networks and information sharing resources regarding our field. Instead of being always active on irrelevant groups we must join the groups as per our career/discipline area and read all the good stuff and gain knowledge.

If you were given a chance to rebuild your career, what changes you would have made to have even better growth and fulfillment?

Himani C: If I had a chance to rebuilt my career, these are the following changes that I would personally make:-

  • Would not think about my past & Acknowledge the losses to move towards success.
  • Would have used social media channels wisely because it eats our lot of productive time.
  • In order to be a part of digital marketing, you need to have excellent communication. So, make sure you have that.

How do you see Digital Media evolving in the future?

Himani C: The world we live in today is populated by digital media products, and these products enable and deliver experiences in many industries, including industries that aren’t typically associated with digital media—such as health, government, and education. The future of digital is rapidly transforming right before our very eyes. The competition is such that even small-scale industries have geared up to take in the digital media market. The companies have been putting all its resources and monetary value into these media.
